PLC Technician / Electrical Controls Technician
DCA Controls | Ancaster / Hamilton area, Ontario
Full-time, part-time or contract arrangements considered
DCA Controls provides industrial electrical installations, custom control panel builds and automation support for manufacturers, OEMs and plant maintenance teams. We are looking for an experienced PLC / electrical controls technician who can work confidently with both industrial electrical systems and PLC/HMI programming.
This is a hands-on controls service and installation role covering the complete job: installing and wiring equipment, developing and troubleshooting control logic, commissioning systems and supporting customers when production equipment needs attention. You will work with our management and technical teams on a variety of shop and customer-site projects.
What you will do
- Install, wire, troubleshoot and maintain industrial electrical equipment, machine controls and control panels.
- Develop, modify and troubleshoot PLC programs and HMI applications, using platforms such as Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) and Siemens.
- Diagnose faults from the field device through the wiring, I/O and control logic, and document the resolution.
- Configure and troubleshoot VFDs, sensors, instrumentation and industrial communication networks such as EtherNet/IP and PROFINET.
- Read electrical schematics, control drawings and equipment documentation; record wiring and program changes accurately.
- Carry out I/O checks, testing, startup and commissioning, including troubleshooting safety circuits and controllers using appropriate procedures.
- Build, wire, test and support custom control panels, working with the team from assembly through installation.
- Follow safe work practices, isolation and lockout procedures, and applicable electrical requirements.
- Communicate clearly with customers and plant personnel, and provide practical technical input for project planning, take-offs and quotations.
What you bring
- Strong industrial electrical and controls experience. A 309A licence is an asset, not a requirement.
- Practical industrial electrical installation and troubleshooting experience.
- Hands-on PLC programming and HMI development experience. Please identify the platforms and software you have used.
- The ability to troubleshoot machine wiring, motors, drives, I/O and field devices systematically.
- Confidence reading electrical drawings and working with industrial networks and machine safety circuits.
- The ability to work independently on service calls while collaborating with a small technical team.
- Reliable follow-through, clear documentation and a professional approach to customer service.
Additional experience we value
- Commissioning and startup of automated equipment.
- Custom control panel design, assembly and testing.
- Experience in manufacturing, food and beverage, or OEM environments.
- The ability to take a project from electrical installation through controls integration and handover.
Working arrangement and compensation
We welcome applicants seeking full-time employment, part-time employment or contract work. The schedule, scope and working arrangement will be discussed based on project needs and the successful candidate's availability.
Starting employee wage: CAD $40–$50 per hour, based on qualifications, programming capability, relevant experience and responsibilities.
Contract rates and terms: to be negotiated based on the agreed scope, availability and deliverables.
The work combines shop activities in the Ancaster / Hamilton area with service and commissioning at customer sites in the GTA and surrounding areas. In-person availability and travel to customer sites are required. Occasional evening or weekend work may be needed for shutdowns, service or commissioning; scheduling and compensation arrangements will be discussed.
